Dance for Mental Health

Every year, world mental health day in October focuses on a topic related to mental health and mental wellbeing. Last May, on occasion of mental health awareness week, there was a big movement focusing on how loneliness is the new global pandemic, and I really feel this is happening. The world feels lonely and in conflict, and we have been struggling to readapt after the pandemic, from which we are still healing. 

Feeling lonely is something that is common in the human condition, but it does not have to be systematic and constant.  Loneliness affects our mental health in a bad way. Science shows that it does to the body the equivalent of what 15 cigarettes per day do. We can prevent this.

When I first arrived in Switzerland in 2009, I did not know almost anyone and what really helped me was dancing. I was a salsa dancer already, but the city of Zurich and its dancing scene was new to me. As soon as I joined the community, and was event teaching as a side job for a few years, I felt I belonged. Dancing is good for mental health, and against loneliness. Let's come together, let's dance for mental health, and get unified by the power of music!
